Birmingham Golf Association

2010 Hall of Fame inductees

On April 24, 2010 Jackie Cummings and Bob Moody were inducted
into the Birmingham Golf Association’s Hall of Fame.
They joined the 56 people who have gone before them into this hall of
fame, including Charley Boswell, William McWane, Sam Perry and Elbert
Jemison into its inaugural class in 1965. Jemison is still going
strong, 89 years old.
It recognizes local golfers who must reside in Jefferson County, or
one of the six counties that touch Jefferson County, for their
achievements in golf in at least two of the following: competitively,
promotionally and administratively.
Cummings, 74, is a storied golfer having won the U.S. Senior Amateur
Championship in 1990. As such, he is one of very few Alabamians to have
won a national championship.
He has played in 15 USGA championships, including seven U.S. Senior
Opens, having made the cut in four of them. He won the State Amateur in
1961, ‘65 and ‘71, and countless invitationals. He was also the
recipient of the prestigious Joe H. King Award in 2001, given by the
Alabama Golf Association to an individual who has made significant
contributions to amateur golf in the state.
He lives in Tuscaloosa and plays at Indian Hills CC.
“This kind of stunned me as I didn’t know I’d be eligible for such an
honor (due to living in Tuscaloosa),” Cummings said.
“Certainly I knew about the Hall of Fame and am delighted to be
inducted.”
Moody, 71, is a member of Greystone and has been a regular winner of
senior amateur events across the state. In recent years he has won the
65+ age division in the State Senior four times, plus many other
championships.
He has served in many administrative and promotional roles at
Greystone, including being president of the club in 2007.
“This is truly an honor and I’m pleasantly surprised to be included,”
Moody said. “I look down the list of inductees and what a great list it
is.”
